European Union presidency issues call for new energy security

14 January, 10:52 | Associated Press
Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek is urging the 27-nation EU to reconsider plans to set up a 120-day reserve of oil and natural gas and instead to seek alternative energy supplies.

Topolanek says the EU must ensure better energy security as a gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine continues to keep gas supplies from flowing to several EU states.

He has proposed that the bloc make as its "highest priority" plans to build a natural gas pipeline to carry Caspian gas through Turkey to Europe.

The Czech leader is also calling for diversification of energy sources including more nuclear power.

Topolanek's country currently holds the rotating EU presidency. He made his proposals Wednesday to the European Parliament.
