A man armed with a gun seized a McDonald’s restaurant in Cherkasy on Thursday, August 7.
Explosions and gunfire heard inside the premises.
“The Cherkasy police are working at the scene of a shooting at a restaurant in the city center. It is preliminary known that a man with a gun is inside the premises. The police evacuated visitors and staff,” the press service of the National Police initially reported.
According to RBC-Ukraine, citing its own sources, the incident took place at the McDonald’s.
An investigative and operational group, special forces, and medics were dispatched to the scene.
Local media later reported that medics carried a bloodied man out of the establishment on a stretcher. RBC-Ukraine confirmed that the wounded man was the shooter. Sources said the injuries were self-inflicted.
The National Police later clarified the circumstances of the incident, saying the man entered the restaurant, fired several shots, injured himself, and then locked himself in the restroom.
“The forces of the KORD special unit detained him, no one else was injured. The victim was hospitalized,” the report stated.
Police added that the shooting was reported at around 11 a.m., prompting an immediate response.
“A special police operation was immediately launched. The police immediately evacuated visitors and staff, and also fenced off the area adjacent to the establishment,” the statement added.
The shooter was detained by KORD special forces within an hour. He is currently being held in procedural custody, and doctors are providing him with the necessary medical assistance.
