Russia Launches Largest Strike on Naftogaz Gas Facilities Since War Began

Russia launched its largest strike on Naftogaz gas sites since the war began, firing missiles and drones that caused critical damage in Kharkiv and Poltava regions.

Russia launched its largest attack on Naftogaz gas production infrastructure since the start of its full-scale invasion, the company said Saturday, Oct. 4.

According to Naftogaz’s press service, about 35 missiles – including several ballistic missiles – and 60 drones targeted gas facilities in Ukraine’s Kharkiv and Poltava regions late Friday. Some of the drones were shot down, but the company reported extensive damage, with some facilities critically hit.

Emergency crews and Naftogaz specialists were working at the sites on Saturday, Ukrainian news agency Interfax reported.

Naftogaz CEO Oleksiy Chernyshov condemned the attack as “targeted terror against civilian facilities that ensure gas production and normal life for people,” saying it had “no military purpose.” He said the strike aimed to disrupt Ukraine’s heating season and deprive citizens of heat in winter.

Chernyshov said Ukraine is coordinating with international partners to ensure a swift and adequate response.

“Terror should not achieve its goal anywhere,” he stressed.
