Russian Strikes Knock Out Power in Sumy Region

At least eight people were hospitalized following Russia’s attack on the Shostka train station.

Along with strikes on passenger rail, Russian forces attacked critical infrastructure in Ukraine’s Sumy region Saturday, cutting power to the city of Shostka and parts of the surrounding district, officials said Saturday.

Sumyoblenergo, the regional power company, reported on Telegram that the outages occurred after Russian strikes hit energy facilities in the area. Crews were working to restore electricity, the company said.

The attack followed a Russian drone strike that hit the railway station in Shostka, damaging a passenger train traveling between the capital of Kyiv and Shostka. President Volodymyr Zelensky said dozens of people were injured in that strike, including railway employees and passengers.

According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, at least eight people were hospitalized following the train station attack. Investigators said a drone first struck a passenger train waiting to depart from the station, and minutes later, as passengers were being evacuated, another drone hit a second train. A pre-trial investigation into possible war crimes has been launched under Article 438 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.
