Paris: Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Olena Hramova and cameraman Yevhen Karmazin in Kramatorsk, in the DonetskOblast, Ukraine, on 23 October.

“I condemn the killing of Olena Hramova and Yevhen Karmazin and call for a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Journalists serve the critical role of informing the world in conflict situations and must therefore be protected. I reiterate my call for the observance of international humanitarian law, including United Nations Security Council Resolution 2222 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel in situations of conflict, a status reaffirmed in the UN Pact for theFuture,” said Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General.

Olena Hramova and Yevhen Karmazin worked as a correspondent and a cameraman respectively for Ukrainian media outlet, FREEDOM. They were travelling on assignment in Kramatorsk when their vehicle was reportedly hit in a drone strike, killing them both and injuring another journalist.

Seven journalists have been killed in Ukraine since the beginning of this year.
