Gas Explosion Blows Up Apartment Building in Khmelnytskyi

Several floors of an apartment building in western Ukraine’s Khmelnytskyi were blown off on Wednesday, with authorities attributing the cause to a domestic gas explosion.

An apartment building in western Ukraine’s Khmelnytskyi was destroyed on Tuesday after a gas leak, according to local authorities.

Khmelnytskyi is located between Kyiv and Lviv, approximately 300 kilometers (186 miles) west of the former.

Local police said the explosion occurred around 3 p.m. on the city’s Ternopilska Street and destroyed “several floors” of the building, with photos showing that a corner of the apartment building had been destroyed.

The police, citing the State Emergency Service, said a “domestic gas explosion” was to blame.

Khmelnytskyi Mayor Oleksandr Symchyshyn said there might be people under the rubble, according to news outlet Suspilne.

At the time of publication, the police did not list any casualties but said rescue work is ongoing.

“The rubble is currently being cleared. City council employees are determining the need for people to be relocated and the threat of further destruction of the building,” the police said in its update as of 4:15 p.m. local time.
