Russian Guided Bomb Strike Kills 5 in Zaporizhzhia as Region Comes Under Heavy Fire

Authorities warn of further guided bomb strikes as emergency crews worked through the night and air raid alerts rang across the wider Zaporizhzhia region.

Five people were killed and at least eight injured after a Russian guided aerial bomb hit a residential area of Zaporizhzhia late Thursday, as the region faced hundreds of strikes over the course of the day, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said in updates posted on Telegram.

Guided bomb strike devastates Shevchenkivskyi district

Fedorov said the bomb struck the Shevchenkivskyi district at around 10 p.m., setting buildings ablaze and causing widespread destruction.

“Unfortunately, we have five dead. Sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of the victims,” he wrote, adding that one of the injured remains in serious condition and that a 17-year-old child is among those hospitalized.

At least five high-rise apartment buildings were damaged, along with trade pavilions and shops. Fires broke out at the impact site but were later extinguished by emergency services. Communal workers began immediate repairs overnight, boarding up shattered windows and addressing structural damage caused by the blast wave, Fedorov said.

Region hit by nearly 400 strikes in a single day

According to the governor, Russian forces carried out 387 strikes across 16 settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region during the day. These included five airstrikes, 205 drone attacks – mostly first-person-view (FPV) drones – six strikes from multiple launch rocket systems, and 171 artillery attacks. Authorities recorded 90 separate reports of damage to residential buildings, vehicles, non-residential structures, and infrastructure facilities.

“Some houses have been hit for the third time already,” Fedorov noted, adding that “Invincibility Points” had been opened for affected residents, where people could receive assistance and shelter.

Fresh air raid alert issued as threat persists

As emergency crews continued to work through the night, local authorities issued a fresh air raid alert on Friday, warning of renewed activity by Russian tactical aviation and the potential use of guided aerial bombs (KABs) across the Zaporizhzhia region. While the city itself was temporarily excluded from the alert, residents in surrounding communities were urged to remain in shelters as the threat persisted.
