Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal said he discussed the issues of Gripen transfers and air defense package with his Swedish counterpart, Poul Jönsson.
In a Ministry of Defense press release on Wednesday, Shmyhal said the two “discussed in detail” the planned transfer of Gripens, including the training for Ukrainian pilots and technicians that might soon commence.
“We are preparing to begin training Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel,” Shmyhal was quoted as saying. He did not provide a timeframe for the training.
Ukraine is set to procure over 100 latest-generation Series E Gripen jets over the next 10 to 15 years, under a memorandum signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky in October. Saab, Gripen’s manufacturer, also hinted at openness to open a factory in Ukraine to cope with the high number of jets planned.
During Wednesday’s call, Shmyhal also briefed Jönsson on Russia’s Tuesday attack on Ukraine, where he said the US F-16 fighters “destroyed the vast majority of the 35 enemy cruise missiles,” according to the press release.
Shmyhal added that Stockholm is set to announce a new air defense package for Kyiv soon.
“I noted Sweden’s significant contribution to strengthening our aviation capabilities. I am grateful for this! We look forward to further close cooperation in this area,” Shmyhal was quoted as saying.
