Radosław Sikorski, Poland’s foreign minister, has said he would support nominating Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize if he succeeds in securing a just peace in Ukraine.
Sikorski was commenting on a combined U.S.-Israeli effort to rally international support for the U.S. president’s public ambition to win the coveted distinction.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Warsaw on Friday with his Luxembourgish counterpart, Xavier Bettel, Sikorski reiterated his position that peace in Ukraine must be fair.
“If President Trump leads to a just peace for Ukraine, then I will also sign such a nomination,” Sikorski said. “My position remains unchanged: we want peace, but it must be a fair peace. If he achieves that, he will have earned the recognition of the world.”
Bettel concurred with Sikorski, saying that a support committee could be formed if a peaceful settlement were achieved.
The push for Trump to be recognized by the Nobel committee was initiated by Mike Johnson, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and Amir Ohana, speaker of Israel’s Knesset.
A letter seeking to garner support from parliamentary speakers and other senior officials was received on Friday by Poland’s lower house of parliament, the Sejm. Sejm Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty said he would give his considered opinion on the matter on Monday.
