Hungary Accuses Ukraine of Attacking TurkStream Infrastructure

Hungary’s foreign minister said an alleged Ukrainian strike on infrastructure linked to the TurkStream pipeline threatens the country’s gas supply.

Hungary has accused Ukraine of attacking infrastructure connected to the TurkStream gas pipeline after Russia claimed that Ukrainian forces targeted the facility.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó made the claim in a post on X on the evening of Tuesday, March 11.

“Ukraine has now attacked the infrastructure of TurkStream in Russia, which guarantees Hungary’s gas supply,” Szijjártó wrote.

He said that the pipeline is critical for Hungary’s energy security.

“Without TurkStream, Hungary simply cannot be supplied with gas safely from a geographical and physical standpoint,” he said.

Szijjártó also accused Ukraine of undermining Hungary’s energy security through earlier disruptions of Russian oil transit via the Druzhba pipeline.

“Ukraine’s oil blockade through the Druzhba pipeline and this strike against TurkStream are serious attacks on our sovereignty,” he wrote.

The TurkStream pipeline transports Russian natural gas across the Black Sea to Turkey and farther into Southeast Europe, including Hungary and Serbia.

Tensions between Kyiv and Budapest have escalated in recent days. On March 5, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said Hungary could “break the Ukrainian oil blockade by force,” while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the pipeline could theoretically resume operations within “a month to a month-and-a-half.”
