Hungary Bans Entry of Several Ukrainians From Schengen Area

Hungary has banned several Ukrainian citizens from entering the country and the Schengen area, citing alleged threats, according to Hungarian media.

Hungary has banned several Ukrainian citizens from entering the country and the Schengen area, Hungarian media reported on Thursday.

According to Hungarian outlet 24.hu, the government decided to bar three Ukrainian nationals, citing alleged threats against Hungary and its leadership.

Gergely Gulyás, head of the Prime Minister’s Office, claimed the individuals had made statements suggesting potential threats to Hungary, including remarks about possible military action and threats directed at Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his family.

The identities of those banned include a former intelligence officer and politician, a Ukrainian major, and a political analyst, according to the report.

Hungarian media noted that at least one of the alleged threats had been presented out of context in pro-government coverage.

It was not immediately clear whether Ukrainian authorities had responded to the decision.

Orbán’s threat to block the €90 billion ($103.6 billion) package has escalated tensions with Brussels, with some EU officials reportedly warning that it could trigger punitive measures against Hungary.

Diplomats told Politico on Thursday that the move had “crossed a red line,” with some member states considering restricting Hungary’s access to EU funds or limiting its voting rights.
