Russia Launches Mass Drone Strike Across Ukraine, 16 Injured Including Children

Russian drones hit a 16-story high-rise in Sumy and an office building in Kyiv early Saturday, injuring at least 16 people as Russia continues its aerial campaign against Ukraine.

Russian forces launched a series of drone strikes across Ukraine overnight on Saturday, April 4, hitting a residential high-rise in Sumy and sparking a fire in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district.

In Sumy, an enemy loitering munition struck the 13th floor of a 16-story apartment building in the city center, according to Sumy Regional Military Administration Head Oleh Hryhorov. The strike ignited a blaze on the upper floors, prompting an immediate evacuation of residents by the State Emergency Service (DSNS).

At least seven people, including one child, were injured in the assault, officials said. Rescuers used high-altitude equipment to extinguish the fire, which affected four different addresses, including private residences.

Sumy City Military Administration Head Serhiy Kryvoshyienko confirmed that four of the victims were treated for injuries following the impact in the city’s Zarichnyi district.

Later, the number of casualties following a massive overnight Russian drone strike on Sumy has risen to 13, including one child, local officials reported on Saturday morning.

Kryvoshyienko said the three-hour assault involved several types of UAVs, including the Gerbera loitering munition. Out of the 13 injured, two people have been hospitalized, while others, including the child, received medical treatment on-site.

“The massive strike by Russian UAVs... caused severe consequences in Sumy,” Kryvoshyienko wrote on Telegram. He added that an additional eight residents were treated for minor injuries at various strike locations.

The attack targeted four separate areas in the city, causing extensive damage to civilian infrastructure. More than 300 windows were shattered across four high-rise residential buildings, and several roofs were destroyed. The strikes also hit gas infrastructure and disrupted power supplies to parts of the city.

Emergency repair crews are currently on-site working to restore utility services, while local authorities have set up temporary housing for displaced residents and headquarters to coordinate relief efforts.

In the capital, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that falling drone debris sparked a fire on the roof of a four-story office building in the Darnytsky district. Kyiv City Military Administration Head Timur Tkachenko said emergency crews worked to contain the blaze on the non-residential structure. Information regarding casualties in Kyiv is still being clarified.

According to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Russia launched 286 UAVs of various types – including Shahed, Gerbera, and Italmas loitering munitions – from multiple locations within Russian territory, including Bryansk, Kursk, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk. Approximately 200 of the launched aircraft were Shahed-type drones.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian forces attacked more than 20 times using drones, artillery, and guided aerial bombs, according to Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration Head Oleksandr Hanzha.

The strikes concentrated on the Nikopol and Synelnykove districts, injuring a five-month-old baby, a six-year-old boy, and a 41-year-old woman. Hanzha said all three victims are receiving outpatient treatment. The attacks damaged private homes, administrative buildings, and a fire truck, sparking several blazes across the Pokrovske, Chervonohryhorivka, and Myrivka communities.

The aerial threat also disrupted transportation, with national railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia announcing emergency stops and passenger evacuations for suburban trains within the Kyiv region. Movement resumed after the immediate threat passed, the company said in a statement on Telegram.

The Saturday morning strikes follow a massive aerial assault on April 3, when Russian forces targeted Kharkiv and Shostka with missiles and guided aerial bombs (KABs).

During Friday’s attacks, four ballistic missiles struck Kharkiv’s Kyivsky district, damaging high-rise buildings and wounding two civilians, including an 18-year-old girl. In Shostka, located in the Sumy region, four KABs hit residential areas, killing a 59-year-old woman and injuring three others.
