Ukraine Replaces Russia-Linked Diplomatic Plates With New Olive Design in Symbolic Break

Ukraine introduced new olive diplomatic plates, replacing a system where Russia once held the top code, in a move officials say reflects a break from past ties.

Ukraine has introduced a new design for diplomatic license plates, replacing the traditional format with olive-colored plates in a move officials say reflects both modernization and a symbolic break with Russia.

The update, initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and implemented jointly with the Interior Ministry’s service center, is aimed at improving identification, transparency, and control over diplomatic vehicles.

The first of the new plates have already been issued to representatives of a foreign diplomatic mission in Kyiv.

While the numbering structure remains unchanged, with the first three digits indicating the diplomatic mission and the rest identifying the vehicle, Ukrainian officials added that the reform goes beyond technical adjustments.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the change corrects that imbalance and aligns state practices with Ukraine’s current geopolitical position.

“This is not just about appearance,” Sybiha said.

“It is about changing reality. The first diplomatic number previously belonged to the aggressor state, Russia. Today, this has been corrected. We are systematically removing Russia from everywhere it still remained.”

He added that the first number is now assigned to diplomats representing one of Ukraine’s key international partners, calling it “an honest reflection of today’s reality and of the level of international support Ukraine receives.”

Officials say the introduction of the new plates is part of a broader effort to modernize administrative systems and eliminate remnants of Soviet-era and Russian-linked practices, particularly in the context of Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine.
