1 Killed, 8 Injured in Russian Strike on Zaporizhzhia

Regional officials say Russia struck the city of Zaporizhzhia, killing one person and injuring eight, with residential buildings and infrastructure damaged in the attack.

One person was killed and eight others injured in a Russian attack on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on April 16, regional authorities said.

Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration, said Russian forces struck the regional capital, causing significant damage.

“There are now three people [known to have been] injured – the number of casualties from the enemy attack on Zaporizhzhia has increased. The Russians struck the regional capital. There is major damage,” Fedorov said in an earlier update, later confirming one fatality.

Officials initially reported three people injured, before revising the figure to five. By 8:10 p.m., the Zaporizhzhia Region Prosecutor’s Office said the number of injured had risen to eight.

All those wounded are receiving medical assistance, authorities said.

A Baptist church in Zaporizhzhia was also struck, destroying a sanctuary that had been built to hold more than 300 worshippers.

Earlier in the day, a separate Russian drone attack in the region injured a 2-year-old boy and a 45-year-old man, and damaged residential buildings and infrastructure, officials added.
