Explosions Heard in Kyiv as Russian Drones Target Capital

Explosions were heard in Kyiv overnight during a Russian drone attack after Ukraine’s Air Force warned that UAVs were moving toward the capital from the east. Officials urged residents to remain in shelters as air defenses could operate. The attack came as Ukraine’s General Staff reported 133 combat clashes since the start of the day, with Russian forces most active near Pokrovsk and Huliaipole.

Explosions were heard in Kyiv overnight Monday-Tuesday during a Russian drone attack on the capital, Ukrinform reported, citing its correspondent.

Ukraine’s Air Force had warned that groups of Russian UAVs were moving toward Kyiv from the east. The Kyiv City Military Administration also alerted residents that air defenses could be operating and urged people in the capital to remain in shelters.

Kyiv City Military Administration head Timur Tkachenko later said drone debris had fallen on a residential building in the city’s Obolonskyi district.

“In the Obolonskyi district, drone debris fell onto the roof of a 20-story residential building,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram, according to Ukrinform.

No immediate casualties were reported in Kyiv.

The attack came as Ukraine’s General Staff said 133 combat clashes had taken place across the front since the start of the day. Russian forces used 4,901 kamikaze drones and carried out 1,926 attacks on populated areas and Ukrainian positions, the General Staff said.

The heaviest fighting was reported on the Pokrovsk and Huliaipole axes.

On the Pokrovsk axis, Russian forces launched 26 attacks near Rodynske, Novooleksandrivka, Hryshyne, Bilytske, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Muravka, Novopidhrodne, Molodetske and toward Novopavlivka. Four attacks were still ongoing at the time of the report.

According to preliminary Ukrainian estimates, Russian losses on the Pokrovsk axis included 50 soldiers killed and 17 wounded. Ukrainian forces also reported destroying one multiple launch rocket system, six vehicles and 50 personnel shelters, while damaging three vehicles and two guns. The General Staff said 150 Russian UAVs of various types were destroyed or suppressed in the area.

On the Huliaipole axis, Ukrainian forces repelled 16 Russian attacks toward Dobropillia, Staroukrainka, Zaliznychne, Nove Zaporizhzhia, Vozdvyzhivka, Charivne and near Huliaipole.

Russian forces also attacked Ukrainian positions eight times on the Southern Slobozhanshchyna axis near Vovchansk, Starytsia and Krasne Pershe, with two clashes still ongoing. On the Lyman axis, Russian troops launched 11 assaults near Lyman, Drobysheve, Zarichne, Ozerne and Stavky.

Ukrainian forces also reported six repelled attacks on the Sloviansk axis and 15 Russian assaults on the Kostiantynivka axis, where three clashes were continuing.

The latest Kyiv alert followed another overnight Russian drone attack in which Ukrainian air defenses neutralized all 27 drones launched by Russian forces overnight on May 10, according to Ukraine’s Air Force.
