At least 24 people, including three children, were killed in Russia’s overnight strike on Kyiv on Thursday, with the death toll rising as emergency services continued clearing rubble and searching for people trapped beneath a destroyed residential building in the capital’s Darnytskyi district.
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 675 attack drones and 56 missiles, mainly targeting Kyiv. Ukrainian air defense units intercepted 652 drones (a 94 percent success rate) and 41 missiles (a 73 percent success rate) during the attack.
In his evening address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said rescue teams were still searching the ruins of a Kyiv apartment block destroyed by a Russian missile strike.
“Work is still ongoing in Kyiv at the site of the strike on a residential building – a Russian missile strike, a residential building literally destroyed, floors from the first to the ninth,” Zelensky said.
Emergency workers were searching for people under the rubble and working to determine the fate of those still missing. At the time of Zelensky’s address, officials had confirmed 10 deaths and 45 injuries in Kyiv. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) later said the death toll had risen to 21, including three children.
Seven bodies were pulled from the rubble of one destroyed residential building, including three men, three women and a young girl, police said.
The DSNS later confirmed on Telegram that, as of 6 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 24 people were killed in the Russian strike.
At the same time, 398 people received psychological assistance.
Dog handlers examined 2,800 square meters (30,139 square feet) of territory, and 3,180 cubic meters (112,300 cubic feet) of debris have been cleared so far.
Another 47 people, including two children, were wounded in the massive missile and drone attack, which hit Kyiv during a two-day barrage across Ukraine.
Zelensky said Russia had carried out a “virtually non-stop aerial attack” over two days, using more than 1,500 drones and 56 missiles of various types.
“There were hits in most of our regions: from Zakarpattia to the Kharkiv region. Ivano-Frankivsk, Rivne, Volyn, Odesa, Poltava, and Sumy regions. Dozens of people were wounded. Unfortunately, people were also killed,” he said, offering condolences to the families of the victims.
The president said Ukrainian officials were still determining exactly which weapons Russia used in the attack. According to preliminary data, he said, the missile that struck the residential building in Kyiv was a Kh-101 manufactured in the second quarter of this year.
“This means Russia is still importing the components, resources, and equipment necessary for missile production in circumvention of global sanctions,” Zelensky said.
He urged Ukraine’s partners to make stopping Russia’s sanctions-evasion schemes a priority, saying Kyiv was preparing to intensify joint action.
“Sanctions must be more painful for Russia,” Zelensky said.
Russia claimed the barrage targeted military-linked sites and energy facilities supporting Ukraine’s army.
The attack also wounded people in Odesa, Kherson and Kharkiv regions.
The Ukrainian leader also said a UN humanitarian mission vehicle came under Russian drone attack in Kherson.
“Russian drones today targeted a vehicle of one of the UN humanitarian missions in Kherson. Deliberately. Fortunately, no one was injured,” he said.
The latest barrage came after a three-day ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump between Kyiv and Moscow last week.
“These are definitely not the actions of those who believe the war is coming to an end,” Zelensky said. “It is important that partners do not remain silent about this strike.”
