Three people, including a child, were killed and three others wounded in the Kyiv region overnight as Russia launched another attack on Ukraine, with explosions reported in the capital Kyiv and Dnipro. Authorities later warned of incoming ballistic missiles.
Kyiv Regional Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko said the attack caused damage at three locations in the Brovary district, northeast of the capital.
“Unfortunately, three people were killed, including a child. Three more were injured, also including a child,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram.
Falling debris damaged a private home, outbuildings and vehicles, while a fire broke out at a non-residential building, according to Tkachenko. Emergency crews remained at the sites as efforts to deal with the aftermath continued.
Earlier in the night, Ukraine’s Air Force warned of Russian attack drones approaching the capital.
“UAVs heading toward Kyiv from the north,” the Air Force reported on Telegram.
The military subsequently reported drones moving toward Kyiv from the north and toward Dnipro from the south.
The threat later escalated, with the Air Force warning of the “threat of ballistic weapon use from the north.”
“An air raid alert has been declared in Kyiv due to the use of ballistic missiles,” the Kyiv City Military Administration said, instructing residents to take shelter.
An AFP reporter in the capital heard around a dozen explosions during the attack.
Russia has significantly increased its attacks on Kyiv in recent months, frequently combining waves of drones with ballistic missiles, which are considerably harder to intercept because of their speed and trajectory.
Civilian infrastructure repeatedly hit this week
The overnight attack follows a series of Russian strikes this week that have damaged residential buildings, businesses, transport facilities and civilian logistics infrastructure across Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Russia carried out a massive missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region that killed 17 people and wounded 44. Ukrainian officials said civilian businesses and infrastructure bore much of the damage.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the main targets included warehouses belonging to civilian companies, while other strikes hit infrastructure and a railway station.
“The targets were not related to the war,” Zelensky said, identifying a brewery, construction-material warehouses and civilian logistics facilities among those struck.
The assault damaged or destroyed major commercial and logistics facilities around the capital, further disrupting businesses that supply ordinary Ukrainians with food, parcels, clothing, vehicle parts and other goods.
A day earlier, Russian forces intensified attacks on the Chernihiv region, where Ukrainian officials reported strikes against businesses, logistics companies and critical infrastructure in Chernihiv, Pryluky and Novhorod-Siverskyi. Russian forces used both conventional attack drones and faster jet-powered unmanned aircraft in the assault.
Kyiv itself had already suffered another major bombardment at the start of the month. During the Aug. 1 attack, Russia launched 35 missiles and 185 drones against Ukraine, including 27 ballistic missiles. Residential buildings and other sites were damaged across several districts of the capital, with fires and casualties reported.
Under international humanitarian law, deliberately targeting civilians or civilian objects constitutes a war crime.
