Russia launched 133 drones at Ukraine overnight on Thursday, Aug. 13, with Ukrainian air defenses intercepting 111 of them, the Ukrainian Air Force said.
Strikes were recorded at 15 locations, while drone debris fell at another 16 sites. The attacks killed two railway workers in Odesa region and wounded at least six people across the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Two railway workers killed in Odesa region
A Russian jet-powered Shahed drone deliberately struck the locomotive of a passenger train in Odesa region, killing the train’s driver and assistant, Ukrainian Railways Board Chairman Oleksandr Pertsovskyi said.
The attack occurred as the train was approaching a station where passengers were supposed to be evacuated after a drone threat was detected.
“Unfortunately, I have to report the most terrible news: according to the information currently available, this strike left no chance for our locomotive crew – the driver and his assistant,” Pertsovskyi said.
The train was carrying 340 passengers. They and the rest of the train crew were evacuated safely, with no injuries reported among them. Passengers were subsequently transported to Odesa by buses.
Pertsovskyi said the locomotive crew had been trying to stop the train and allow passengers to disembark safely when the jet-powered drone made a rapid maneuver, leaving the crew insufficient time to evacuate themselves.
“This is a terrible daily terror and a deliberate attack on civilians,” he said.
The attack also wounded an 18-year-old woman in Odesa region, Odesa Regional Governor Oleh Kiper said. She was hospitalized in serious condition.
The strike also damaged port infrastructure in the Izmail district, where a fire broke out. Emergency crews were working to extinguish the fire, according to the Izmail district administration.
Russian attacks cause fires and injure child in Chernihiv region
Russian drone attacks caused fires and damaged civilian infrastructure in Chernihiv region overnight with a 10-year-old child suffering a mild stress reaction, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) said.
In Chernihiv district, falling Russian drones set fire to an outbuilding, a gas station and dry vegetation. The child was injured in the aftermath of the attack. Also, a Russian drone fell on the territory of a garage cooperative overnight, starting a fire in two garages. One car was destroyed and garage buildings were damaged.
The attacks came as Russian forces targeted Chernihiv with jet-powered drones. Earlier, the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration reported strikes on the garage cooperative and the territory of two enterprises. No casualties were initially reported in those strikes.
Rescuers quickly extinguished all fires, the DSNS said.
Five wounded in Dnipropetrovsk region
Five people were wounded in more than 10 Russian drone and artillery attacks across three districts of Dnipropetrovsk region, Regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said.
In Kamianske district, three people were injured in the Krynychanska community. A 34-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition, while two other men, aged 37 and 45, were treated as outpatients.
In Nikopol district, two men aged 22 and 36 were wounded and hospitalized in moderate condition. Cars and a garage were damaged.
Infrastructure was also damaged in Pavlohrad, where a fire broke out.
Russian strikes continue after overnight drone attack
Russian forces also attacked Zaporizhzhia region with guided aerial bombs in the morning.
A 65-year-old man was wounded in an attack on Novoivanivka, Zaporizhzhia Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov said.
Residential buildings were destroyed and damaged in the strike. The injured man was receiving medical treatment.
The overnight attacks came as Russia intensifies strikes against Ukrainian civilian and critical infrastructure, including railways and port facilities.
