Language Lab is inviting Ukrainian-language learners around the world to a special Independence Day edition of its Speaking Club, a free online conversation session set for Aug. 23, the eve of the country’s most significant national holiday.
Ukraine will mark 35 years since the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Act of Declaration of Independence on Aug. 24, 1991, in the chaotic days following a failed coup in Moscow – a declaration later affirmed by a referendum in which roughly 90% of voters backed independence.
In peacetime, the anniversary has traditionally brought parades, flag-raisings and street festivals to Kyiv and cities across the country. This year, as in every year since the full-scale invasion began, official commemorations remain scaled back under martial law. But for Ukrainians and the diaspora, the date has only grown heavier with meaning – a yearly marker of endurance as much as celebration.
That’s the spirit Language Lab is hoping to bring into its Zoom room. The session, open to learners of every level, will blend language practice with reflection: participants will talk through vocabulary tied to independence and national identity, share what the holiday means to them personally, and connect with a global community of learners and native-speaking facilitators – all in a mix of Ukrainian and English.
“Whether you’re just starting out or already comfortable holding a conversation, this is a chance to practice speaking and mark the day together, wherever you happen to be,” organizers said.
The event runs Sunday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m. Kyiv time, with the Zoom link sent out after registration. It’s free, and organizers are encouraging participants to bring along friends, partners or anyone curious to join.
