A Russian attack on Kyiv killed at least one person and injured others overnight into Saturday, Aug. 22, after several ballistic missiles targeted the Ukrainian capital, officials said.
Explosions were heard across Kyiv after Ukraine’s Air Force warned of a ballistic missile threat from the northeast and reported several missiles heading toward the city.
The Air Force later reported Russian Banderol loitering munitions moving toward Brovary and Kyiv.
Kyiv authorities said a warehouse caught fire in the capital’s Darnytskyi district following the attack. At least one person was killed and others were injured, according to preliminary information. Emergency services were working at the scene.
The ballistic missile alert was later lifted, but another air raid warning was issued as Russian drones threatened the capital, according to the Kyiv City Military Administration.
The attack comes just two days before Ukraine marks its 35th Independence Day on Monday, Aug. 24.
Earlier Friday, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) urged people to remain particularly vigilant in the run-up to and during Independence Day, warning of possible Russian provocations and terrorist attacks.
The latest strike follows a devastating Russian attack on Kyiv on Aug. 20. According to city authorities, 16 people were killed and 42 injured in attacks on the capital that day. Residential buildings, a school, a children’s hospital and other civilian infrastructure were damaged.
Kyiv observed a day of mourning on Friday for those killed in the Aug. 20 attacks.
