Russian forces attacked Zaporizhzhia with drones overnight on Monday, Sept. 7, striking a shopping center, according to regional authorities.
Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration (OVA), said on Telegram that Russian troops had targeted a shopping center and later published footage showing the aftermath.
“The enemy attacked Zaporizhzhia with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The shopping center was hit. There were no casualties,” Fedorov said.
Local Telegram channels reported that the City Mall shopping center was heavily damaged and burned down in the strike.
According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS), six fires broke out at the shopping center, covering a total area of 700 square meters (7,500 square feet).
All emergency services were deployed to the scene, with 40 rescuers and 10 pieces of equipment involved in clearing the aftermath.
The DSNS also reported fires and damage in two districts of the Odesa region following the overnight Russian attack.
In the Odesa district, two cars and dry grass caught fire, while fences, facades, and windows of two residential buildings were damaged.
In the Izmail district, a residential building was damaged, while two cars and an outbuilding caught fire. All fires were quickly extinguished, according to the DSNS.
As per the Air Force report, Russia launched an overnight attack beginning at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, using 92 Shahed attack drones, including jet-powered variants, as well as Gerbera and Parody-type decoy drones and S8000 Banderol drones.
The air attack was repelled by Ukrainian Defense Forces aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare, and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile fire groups.
According to preliminary data, as of 9 a.m. on Monday, Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 71 Russian drones.
“Enemy air attack assets were hit at 12 locations, while falling debris from downed drones was recorded at one location,” the report said.
