Britain will provide Ukraine with a £100 million ($116 million) military aid package that includes Patriot missiles and other air defense equipment ahead of winter.
According to European Truth, the package will also include air defense interceptors, large-caliber artillery ammunition, and drones intended to help Ukraine defend against Russian attacks during the winter months.
The weapons will be supplied through NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a mechanism under which Ukraine’s allies finance the purchase of US-made weapons for Kyiv.
Patriot missiles and other air defense equipment are expected to arrive in Ukraine before the winter, according to the British government.
The package is intended to strengthen protection for Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, civilian population, and the armed forces.
The announcement follows recent visits to Kyiv by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Defense Secretary Wes Streeting. During the visits, President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed the need for additional military assistance before the winter season begins.
Streeting said the talks in Kyiv had underscored the urgency of strengthening Ukraine’s defenses as Russia continues attacking civilian and energy infrastructure. He accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of preparing to use winter as a weapon through continued attacks on civilian sites and energy facilities.
“We promised to mobilize allies and provide more support wherever we can,” Streeting said, adding that the new package would turn international commitments into additional military capabilities for Ukraine.
The announcement came as Streeting prepared to co-chair his first meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
The group, commonly known as the Ramstein format, brings together about 50 countries that coordinate military assistance for Ukraine. Its 36th meeting was scheduled to take place remotely on Sept. 8.
