A woman was killed and another person injured when a Russian drone struck a nine-story residential building in Kyiv’s Dniprovskyi district on Wednesday, Sept. 9, city authorities said.
According to the Kyiv City Military Administration (KMVA), the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) hit the apartment block and started a fire, prompting emergency crews to respond.
“Unfortunately, it became known that a woman was killed as a result of the enemy attack. We express our condolences to her family and loved ones,” the KMVA said in an update.
Authorities also confirmed that one person had been injured. Their condition was not immediately disclosed.
“A UAV strike on a nine-story residential building has been recorded in the Dniprovskyi district. A fire broke out,” the KMVA said in its initial statement.
Information about the extent of the damage and the number of residents evacuated from the building was still being clarified.
Conflicting reports over impact site
Officials initially issued differing accounts of the precise impact site.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko separately reported a fire inside a warehouse building in the Dniprovskyi district following the drone attack.
An Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported that a Russian UAV had fallen and detonated in a non-residential area several hundred meters from apartment buildings. Police reportedly closed a nearby street due to the risk of another explosion.
It was not immediately clear whether the reports described different impact sites or whether the preliminary information had subsequently been revised.
Kyiv repeatedly attacked throughout the day
The fatal strike came after Russian drones repeatedly targeted the Ukrainian capital throughout Wednesday.
Before the latest attack, city authorities said at least nine people had been injured across Kyiv.
Earlier on Wednesday, a Russian drone struck a 24-story residential building in the Darnytskyi district at the level of the 11th and 12th floors. A fire broke out on the 12th floor and several walls were destroyed.
Falling debris also caused fires on open ground at other locations in the Darnytskyi district.
Kyiv’s air raid alert was activated again during the afternoon after authorities warned that a jet-powered drone was flying above the city.
“Kyiv is under a UAV attack. We ask city residents to proceed immediately to the nearest shelters,” the KMVA said.
