You're reading: Pyatt hopes for elections in occupied territories under Ukrainian law

U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey R. Pyatt has expressed the hope that Ukrainians in the occupied territories and displaced persons will soon be able to exercise their right to vote in line with Ukrainian law and the Minsk agreements.

“Continue to hope Ukrainians in occupied territories, IDPs, refugees may soon choose own leaders, consistent with Ukrainian law, OSCE standards, and Minsk agreements,” the ambassador wrote on Twitter on Dec. 1.

As regards the Nov. 29 elections in Mariupol, Pyatt tweeted: “U.S. welcomes successful conduct of local elections in Mariupol & congratulates city’s residents for exercising their right to vote.”

He also recalled that OPORA civil platform and the Committee of Voters of Ukraine observers judged the elections to be smooth and without major violations.
