Ukraine plans to start compensating for reductions in the import of increasingly expensive Russian natural gas by buying the commodity this summer on the spot market, Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Boiko told reporters in Kyiv on Jan. 13.

“One of the diversification directions is buying gas on the spot markets. We have been preparing for this process for a long time, [and we] have worked on all possibilities,” Boyko said.

“This morning I had a conversation with [EU Energy Commissioner] Gunther Oettinger, and once again received confirmation that we will have support… This diversification direction will be realized this summer,” Boyko added.
