You're reading: CEC announces launch of parliamentary election campaign from July 30

The Central Election Commission has announced that the parliamentary election campaign in Ukraine will begin on Monday, July 30.

CEC Chairman Volodymyr Shapoval announced this at a meeting of the Central Election Commission on Friday.

The elections will be held on October 28. They will be held under a
mixed system. Half of the seats in the Verkhovna Rada (225) will be won
by candidates who gain a simple majority of the vote in single-member
constituencies. Another half will be distributed among the candidates
from the lists of the parties that get more than 5% of the vote.
Candidates for single-mandate constituencies can be nominated by parties
or through self-nomination.

The last time the parliamentary elections were held under a mixed system was in 2002.

According to the schedule worked out by the CEC, the nomination of
candidates on party lists and in single-mandate constituencies will
begin on July 30 and end on August 9.

Unlike all previous elections, candidates running for single-mandate
constituencies will be registered by the Central Election Commission,
rather than by district election commissions.

Documents for registration of candidates should be submitted to the
CEC no later than August 13, and in general, the registration should be
completed on August 20.
