You're reading: Director of IMF European Department Moghadam to join fund mission in Ukraine

The mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to Ukraine next week will be headed by the deputy head of the department of the IMF European Department, Nikolay Gueorguiev, who since June 4 last year has been IMF Mission Chief for Ukraine.

IMF official representative Gerry Rice said at a press conference in Washington late on Thursday that in a few days Director of the IMF European Department Reza Moghadam would join the mission.

Rice said it was difficult to say what size of loan could be issued to Ukraine, or give its terms and conditions, noting that this would be determined after the mission completes its work in the country.

At the same time, he stressed that the IMF can move in its work very quickly in crisis situations if there is a developed program. The fund representative noted that the new leadership of Ukraine has informed they intend to implement large-scale reforms.

Rice also reported that preliminary discussions about the possibility of providing Ukraine with fiscal aid involved foreign ministers from Britain, Germany, while IMF Director Christine Lagarde discussed the issue with the finance ministers of the G-20 member states, including Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov.

As reported, the new Ukrainian government announced the intention to open a new Stand-By Arrangement at the IMF in the amount of $15 billion for Ukraine.
