You're reading: Hrytsenko: Ukraine does not need Russian gas

The head of the Ukrainian parliament's committee on national security and defense, the leader of the Civil Position Party, MP Anatoliy Hrytsenko, has said that Ukraine does not need Russian gas.

"Let Russia set an exorbitant price of even one million dollars per thousand cubic meters of natural gas. We have enough domestically produced gas and other resources in order to cover the needs of our country," the politician’s press service quoted him as saying live on the TVi Channel.

In his opinion, there can be no strategic partnership between two states, when one of them "is on its knees before the other and pays more than any other developed and economically stronger country."

"Russia has humiliated Ukraine three times: in 2006, 2009 and 2010," Hrytsenko said.

He added that in the context of the signing of gas contracts in 2009, it is impossible to blame someone for these contracts being disadvantageous for Ukraine.

"At the end of December 2008, agreement was reached between the two prime ministers – Vladimir Putin and Yulia Tymoshenko – on a gas price of $235 per thousand cubic meters. After Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko removed Naftogaz Ukrainy CEO Oleh Dubyna from the talks, Russia, represented by state leaders, flew into a rage and charged an exorbitant price. So it’s impossible to talk about the personal responsibility of one person," he said.

He said he was confident that in that situation "Russia played [a game], and it played [it] against Ukraine."
