The current contract on the purchase and sale of natural gas in 2009-2019, which was signed with Russia's Gazprom on Jan. 19, 2009, envisages the possibility of changing the annual amount of natural gas supplies, Ukraine's state oil and gas company Naftogaz has reported.

"Given the high price of imported natural gas, in particular, it amounted to about $400 [per 1,000 cubic meters] in the fourth quarter of 2011, taking into account the discount provided in line with the Kharkiv agreements, the needs of the Ukrainian economy in this energy resource significantly decreased in 2012," the Ukrainian company said in a statement on Wednesday.

"In this regard and in accordance with the provisions of the contract and in the terms defined by it, Naftogaz Ukrainy sent about ten letters to Gazprom asking it to agree natural gas supplies to Ukraine in 2012 in the amount of 27 billion cubic meters, which the company pledges to import and pay under the current contract," reads the statement.
