You're reading: Political scientist: Ukraine must keep control over its gas transporting system

Head of the Penta Center for Applied Political Studies Volodymyr Fesenko has said that Ukraine has no choice but to reform national JSC Naftogaz Ukrainy and the gas transporting system (GTS) of the country.

"There is simply no other way out. Reform of Naftogaz Ukrainy and searching for a solution to the problem with Ukraine’s GTS are tasks that have to be tackled either by the current authorities, or by the next," the expert said at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday.

According to Fesenko, Naftogaz Ukrainy cannot exist in the way it does now, otherwise it will become bankrupt.

In addition, the political scientist said he thinks that this problem should be considered in an economic context, and not a political one, and Ukraine has to defend its national interests in this process.

"We should strive to defend the country’s national interests. Ukraine should retain control over the GTS. We should think over the form and conditions. But sitting on the pipeline and shouting ‘we will not give it to anyone,’ to my mind, has absolutely no prospects," he said.

Fesenko stressed that the process of privatization should be transparent and controlled.
