You're reading: Tariffs for railway passenger transportation in Ukraine increased by 10 percent compared to 2013

The State Railway Administration of Ukraine (Ukrzaliznytsia) has indexed railway cargo tariffs by 10 percent compared to 2013.

“The tariffs for passenger trains will be indexed from Aug. 8 and
Oct. 1, 2014. The cost of tickets will grow two times by 10 percent for all
categories of passenger wagons, apart from the luxury class wagons and
Intercity+ trains. However, the tariffs on passenger transportation
after the indexation will remain lower than the economically justifiable
level,” reads a press release of Ukrzaliznytsia.

The administration said that the tariffs are indexed on the basis of
an order of the Infrastructure Ministry of July 21, 2014 on the approval
of changes to the tariffs on passenger, luggage and cargo-luggage
transportation by rail on domestic routes. The tariffs on transportation
of luggage and cargo-luggage are not changed.

The increase of the tariffs in December 2014 on December 2013 will total 21 percent.

“In particular, today the price of a ticket for the third class wagon
of the named train on the Kyiv-Kharkiv route (489 kilometers) with the
coefficient 1 for days of week and the period of the year 1.07 (taking
into account the commission fee and the cost of linen) amounts to Hr
115.40, that for the second class wagon – Hr 207.94. After the first
increase in the tariffs the price of ticket for the third class wagon
will grow by Hr 8.84, to Hr 124.24, and in the second class wagon – by
18.10, to Hr 226.04. After the second stage – from Oct. 1, 2014,
the price of ticket will fall, as the lower coefficient will be used –
0.93,” Ukrzaliznytsia said.

The administration said that the increase in the price of tickets is
linked to the necessity of gradual decrease of the cross-subsidy of
passenger transportation by cargo transportation by rail, bringing them
to the economically justifiable level and allowing the partial coverage
of expenses linked to the increase in the prices of products bought for
the needs of passenger transportation and provision of safety on
railways.

In 2013 and 2014, the price of products bought for the needs of the
sector has grown. The prices of diesel fuel grew by 54 percent, electricity –
by 20.3 percent, locomotive tires – by 21.3 percent, passenger wheels – by 11.7 percent, etc.

“The price of tickets of Ukrainian railways is the cheapest among the CIS countries,” Ukrzaliznytsia said.
