You're reading: Ukrderzhbudekspertyza permits start of preparation work on building nuclear fuel plant

Private joint-stock company Nuclear Fuel Plant has received a positive conclusion from state enterprise Ukrderzhbudekspertyza regarding a project on preparation work for the construction of its nuclear fuel plant, the press service of Nuclear Fuel Concern reported on Tuesday.

The press service said that the total estimated cost of the preparation work in current prices as of Aug. 1, 2013 amounted to Hr 51.9 million, and it would take six and a half months to carry out the preparation work.

The preparation work includes the development of an access road for the period of construction, the provision of power and water supplies to the construction site, the construction of temporary buildings, facilities and a construction administrative and amenity section, the installation of onsite utilities, a concrete mixing unit and organization the guarding of the construction site.

Earlier Vice President of Rusatom Overseas Alexander Merten in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine said that actual work on the construction site of the plant could start in September 2013.

As reported, the Ukrainian government in September 2010 approved the results of a tender to select the technology to build the nuclear fuel plant that was won by TVEL. The agreement on construction was signed in October 2010, and the process of registering the joint venture was completed in 2011.

A land plot of 6.8 hectares near Smolyne (Kirovohrad region) has been allocated for the realization of the project. A 50% plus one share stake in the plant belongs to Ukrainian-based Nuclear Fuel state concern, and a 50% minus one share stake to TVEL.

The plant is supposed to start producing nuclear fuel elements and assemblies, as well as zirconium and stainless steel components in 2015, and fuel powder and pellets in 2020. The total cost of the plant’s construction will be around $450 million.
