State Railways Administration Ukrzaliznytsia is working on the electrification of the lines to Crimea and the Black Sea ports.

According to the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia, the main transit
direction for transport cargos from Russia to Mykolaiv, Illichivsk,
Odesa seaports and Yuzhny port is the
Topoli-Kupiansk-Osnova-Liubotyn-Poltava-Kremenchuk-Znamyanka-Dolynska-Mykolaiv-Kherson-Vadym-Dzhankoi
route.

Ukrzaliznytsia plans to electrify sections of the Dolynska-Mykolaiv
(148 km) and Mykolaiv-Kolosivka (105 km) lines, which were previously
not electrified.

“This route from the borders of Russia to the Black Sea ports,
passing through Pivdenna Railways (the main stations are Burty,
Korystivka, Znamyanka), has been electrified to the junction with Odesa
Railways. Now we plan to electrify the routes to the ports of Odesa and
Mykolaiv regions, where the Dolynska-Mykolaiv and Mykolaiv-Kolosivka
sections are the key ones,” the statement reads, citing Odesa Railways
Head Mykola Lukhanin.

Part of the design work has been completed. Ukrzaliznytsia plans to
raise funds from the world’s financial institutions for the
electrification work, which is scheduled for next year.

The electrification of the Dolynska-Mykolaiv and Mykolaiv-Kolosivka
sections will allow the railways to increase the volume of
transportation to the ports, and the use of electric locomotives instead
of diesel locomotives will allow the maximum permissible number of
wagons to be pulled.
