The financial losses of Ukraine’s state railways holding Ukrzaliznytsia from long-distance passenger transportation in 2011 surged by 19.4 percent compared to 2010, to Hr 3.4 billion, officials at the railway’s press service said.

In 2011m the railway handled 132.8 million passengers on long routes, which is 3.2 percent up compared to 2010.

As part of a plan to reduce losses, the state railway last year reduced the frequency of passenger trains according to demand, increased the average speed of passenger trains, and cancelled some stops and the most unprofitable trains and trailer cars.

Ukrzaliznytsia expects its losses from suburban passenger transportation in 2011 to amount to Hr 3.1 billion, or 10.9 percent up compared to 2010.
