The Ukrainian State Emergency Service has informed that the fire in the exclusion zone at the Chornobyl Puscha special facility has been extinguished.
“At 10.30 on April 29, the fire was contained. At 09.00 on May 2, the fire was extinguished,” the agency said on its website, in the section of updates on the fire that broke out on April 28.
According to the agency, its teams and forestry workers are observing and combing through the high-risk fire area.
At this point, background radiation in the fire area is normal, averaging 21 micro-roentgens per hour (the safe background radiation level is 50 microroentgens per hour).
Background radiation on the industrial site at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant is 58 micro-roentgens per hour; in the exclusion zone, 22 microroentgens per hour; in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, 11 microroentgens, the agency said.
