Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has ordered additional units of the Interior Ministry's forces and the National Guard of Ukraine to protect the exclusion zone of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant from intruders.

“I am asking the interior minister to send there (to the exclusion zone) additional units of the National Guard and the Interior Ministry. To send the contingent of the Interior Ministry and the National Guard for a few weeks to guard and monitor the exclusion zone,” he said at a meeting of the government commission on man-made disasters and ecological safety in Kyiv on Aug. 14.

Yatsenyuk told those present at the meeting that fires in the exclusion zone are frequently caused by arson, as fire torches were found at the sites of the fires.

In this regard, the prime minister ordered for tightened control over access to the exclusion zone.
