You're reading: Brussels: Eastern Partnership summit declaration in making, Ukraine accord on the table

Brussels - The European Commission is not commenting on Polish media reports speculating on the likely contents of the declaration to be adopted at the Eastern Partnership summit.

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton's spokesperson Maja Kocijancic said at a press briefing on Tuesday that details cannot be provided at this point as the work is continuing. The European Union has been saying all along that it seeks political association and economic integration with Eastern partners and this position has not changed, she said.

Asked whether former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s call for signing the associated membership agreement disregarding her personal situation, will be taken in to account, Kocijancic said that the position on Tymoshenko remains unchanged. Brussels is encouraging the Ukrainian authorities to solve the problem of selective justice, including the Tymoshenko case, she said.

The European Union has also taken note of Tymoshenko’s decision to go on hunger strike, she said.

She said again that the European Union’s proposal for signing the associated membership agreement with Ukraine remains on the table. Brussels will continue cooperating with Ukraine, Kocijancic said.
