The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) is hearing three cases against Russia under an initiative of the Ukrainian government, Ukrainian Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko has said.

“Now, under the initiative of the Ukrainian government, the ECHR is hearing three cases of Ukraine against Russia. The first and the largest one is linked to the illegal military aggression and annexation of Crimea. There is a preliminary decision on it – Russia is obliged to remove its military from the territory of the peninsula. The issue of violating the ownership rights of the Ukrainian state is being settled – our claims to Russia have reached Hr 1.2 trillion, and the figure will grow,” he said in an interview with the Focus publication published last week.

The second claim is linked to the kidnapping of children by terrorists who took them to the territory of Russia.

“The ECHR demanded the immediate return of the children to Ukraine. This case is of a political importance. We’ll prove the involvement of Russia in the actions of terrorists’ organizations on the territory of Ukraine,” Petrenko said.

A third case is in the interests of ex-leader of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People member of parliament Mustafa Jemilev, who was banned from entering Crimea by the peninsula’s authorities.
