President of the Bundestag, the lower house of the German parliament, Norbert Lammert will support the ratification of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement by the German parliament, which is expected to take place before the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga, according to a joint statement of the heads of the Bundestag and the Verkhovna Rada.

“The president of the German Bundestag will support the decision on the ratification of the Association Agreement, which should be taken before the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga, and will be accompanied by the provision of the agreed additional macro-financial assistance to support economic stabilization reforms in Ukraine by the European Union and international financial institutions,” reads a statement released on Feb. 16.

At a joint briefing with Lammert, Verkhovna Rada Speaker Volodymyr Hroisman expressed his hope that a political decision to introduce a visa-free regime for Ukrainians will be passed during the Riga summit.

However, Ukraine still has some work to do in persuading the EU to make the decision, Hroisman added.
