Wisla – Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has said that the trilateral talks between Ukraine, Poland and Slovakia, which have been held in Wisla (Poland) on Thursday, are very important in the context of the upcoming EU-Ukraine Summit due on February 25 in Brussels.

Komorowski told the media following the trilateral meeting that presidents wishing Ukraine success on its way towards European integration participated in today’s meeting.

“In such a way we would like to help Ukraine to achieve the final desired result, which is the signing and ratification of the Association Agreement [between Ukraine and the EU] during the summit in Vilnius in November,” he said.

“That is why I would like to give a positive signal based on our talks with [Ukrainian President Viktor] Yanukovych and [President of Slovakia Ivan] Gasparovic. This positive signal actually refers to the upcoming visit of Yanukovych to the summit in Brussels on February 25,” the Polish president said.

“We are meeting at a very important moment, as a process of decision-making by the European Union starts concerning the use of the signing and ratification of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union. We are meeting at a time when the fate of this effort is being decided, the fate of the huge effort taken by Ukraine in the process of holding the negotiations and the initialing of the association agreement. This is also the effect of personal involvement and work of Mr. President Yanukovych,” the Polish president said.

Komorowski also expressed optimism about decisions “that will be taken by Yanukovych and which are important in the context of the restoration of positive image of Ukraine in the EU Member States.”

According to the Polish president, these decisions should be, first of all, related to the situation with former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former Interior Minister of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko.

“We also realize there are significant difficulties in the way,” he said.
