You're reading: Russian lawmaker: Ukrainian decision to defer association is due to miscalculation by EU

State Duma International Affairs Committee Chairman Alexei Pushkov has pinned the blame for the Ukrainian government's decision to defer the signing of an association agreement with the European Union on the EU.

“The EU has apparently gone too far in its pressure on Ukraine and set additional political conditions for the agreement, which have dubious advantages. That was a big miscalculation,” Pushkov wrote on Twitter on Thursday night.

The deal was supposed to have been signed at a summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, next week.  The government’s rejection is seen as yielding to Russian pressure on Yanukovych to abandon the EU drive.
