You're reading: Several Ukraine cities hold rallies against suspension of integration with Europe

Protests against the Ukrainian authorities' decision to suspend preparations for the signing of an association agreement with the European Union were staged in several regions of Ukraine last night.

According to the Ukrainska Pravda online newspaper, these actions took place in Uzhgorod, Donetsk, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lutsk and Lviv, where protesters gathered near the city’s Taras Shevchenko monument.

Up to 2,000 people joined a similar rally in Independence Square in the center of the country’s capital, Kyiv, on November 21.

Their ire was prompted by the government’s decision earlier in the day to abandon an historic political and free trade agreement with the European Union, a deal that could have paved Ukraine’s way to eventual membership in the 28-nation bloc of democracies.
