You're reading: Ukraine has little time to catch up on reforms for European integration, says Klitschko

Ukraine should demonstrate at the state level the progress in reforms that will bring the country closer to the European community and it is important that the country should catch up on its commitments to the European Union, Leader of the UDAR Party Vitali Klitschko has said.

“Even if the association agreement is negotiated and signed, in order to have it ratified by all the EU countries, Ukraine has to comply with the basic political values and principles of the European Community, such as the rule of law, the absence of selective justice, real reforms, and democratic electoral law. To achieve this, Ukraine has much to do and the time is very short,” Klitschko said at a meeting with Foreign Minister of the Czech Republic Karel Schwarzenberg in Prague on Friday, the party’s press service reported.

Schwarzenberg said that Ukraine is one of the most important countries in Europe, but that it has to go all the complicated path of European integration. “And Ukraine has to comply with the judgment of the European Court concerning Yulia Tymoshenko,” the Czech minister said.

The UDAR party leader for his part said the parliamentary opposition was ready to work constructively on the laws that are needed for the European integration of the country.

“For our part, we, as the opposition, are pressing on the authorities to make them meet the commitments so that the country should not lose the chance to join the European community. If the Ukrainian authorities fail to adhere to the commitments, the issue of personal sanctions against officials cannot be avoided,” Klitschko said.
