You're reading: Yanukovych responsible for signing Association Agreement with EU

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius has said that Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych is responsible for the signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU in Vilnius.

“A few days remain until the summit and it will be difficult to change anything,” Linkevicius said at a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday.

“I would like to stress once again that it’s not just anybody – it’s Ukrainian President [Viktor] Yanukovych who bears a huge responsibility. He has to take the position of leader and make a decision. He really has to play this part at this crucial moment and he has to decide which part he will play. We’ll see in the next few days.”

The minister also said the situation in Ukraine was very difficult before the signing of the Association Agreement.

“Sometimes the signals are very confusing. But we should not make any forecasts, let’s keep doing what we have been doing all the time.”

He said that the EU’s position has not changed – Ukraine has to fulfill the necessary conditions.

“The Verkhovna Rada will hold a sitting tomorrow and we’ll see what their intentions are. And when or if they fulfill necessary conditions, we will also take our decisions,” Linkevicius said.
