MOSCOW - Russian police have placed the Polish Embassy in Moscow under special protection, apparently because of violence between Russian and Polish soccer fans in Warsaw on June 12.

In addition to the usual police checkpoint, there were several riot
policemen in camouflage uniforms posted at the entrance to the building,
and a bus with a reserve police force was parked across the road, the
Sport-Ekspress newspaper said.

The paper surmised that the reason for the measure were attacks by
Polish soccer hooligans on Russian fans in Warsaw on Monday before and
after a game between the Russian and Polish national teams during the
current UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 2012), and
counterattacks from the Russian fans.

A spokesman for the Moscow police authority told Interfax the purpose
of the police reinforcement outside the embassy was to prevent
“possible hooligan manifestations.”
