You're reading: Opponents throwing flares at pro-EU rally in Kharkiv

Kharkiv - Flares were hurled at activists of the pro-European Pan-Ukrainian Euromaidan Forum in Kharkiv on Sunday.

The first flares were set off when pro-EU demonstrators were putting sound amplifiers in place, after Party of Regions activists made an unsuccessful attempt to seize the equipment.

Flares keep flying from different directions. No one has been injured, according to immediate reports.

In the meantime, the Ukrainian television company Ukrtelecom is broadcasting Party of Regions members’ speeches about the negative effects Ukraine could have suffered if it had signed the association pact with the European Union.

Ukraine would have lost independence, they claimed.

EU integration supporters responded by chanting “Shame!” and “We are not listening!”

Party of Regions activists earlier gathered near the monument to Yaroslav the Wise in Kharkiv, where members of the Pan-Ukrainian Euromaidan Forum had started a rally. Police divided the two camps with a fence.
