You're reading: Prosecutor: Weapons stolen from Lviv police still held by civilians

Most of the weapons stolen in February 2014 from Lviv police are held by civilians, Lviv regional prosecutor Volodymyr Hural said.

“To date, most of the stolen weapons have been held by the population. Police are not enforcing the return of the weapons. Those weapons that were returned to the police were brought in by citizens themselves,” he told a press conference on June 18.

The Lviv regional police are not conducting any due operation to recover weapons, despite prosecutors repeatedly telling senior regional police officers that recovering the stolen weapons must be one of their priorities, the prosecutor said.

According to the former Lviv regional police chief, Oleksandr Rudiak, over 1.150 firearms were stolen from Lviv police stations on February 18-19.

Later the chief of staff at Lviv regional police, Yuriy Hladun, said that 935 firearms were stolen, 617 of which were never returned.
