Moscow - Gazprom is pumping 700 million cubic meters of gas into underground storage facilities in Hungary to mitigate the risk concerning gas transit via Ukraine in the winter.

State energy trader MVM said 135 mcm of gas had already been stored.

The country’s underground storage facilities currently hold 4.162 billion cubic meters of gas, which is 67.46 percent of their maximum capacity. This is the lowest figure in Europe, but it is still far higher than last year’s reserves on the same date, which stood at 2.8 billion cubic meters.

The deal with Gazprom will increase reserves in storage to 77 percent of capacity.
