You're reading: Kolesnichenko: Language law to be sent to president for signature in late July

Sevastopol – The law on principles of state language policy will be submitted to the Ukrainian president for signature in late July 2012, a co-author of the law, Regions Party MP Vadym Kolesnichenko, has said.

“Regardless of how the situation develops, the bill will come out of parliament at the end of this month. And then the president said clearly and unambiguously that the position for the protection of the constitution and human rights is a priority for the president,” he told journalists in Sevastopol, when asked to comment on the further fate of the law.

Kolesnichenko said that the law complies with European standards and that it had received positive comments from European institutions.

“I believe that there are no grounds to veto the bill,” he said.

In connection with the “Lytvyn conflict,” the MP said that an extraordinary session of parliament would be held soon, because the Constitutional Court had explained that the speaker is elected and dismissed by a simple majority.

“Today, when we have this decision, it’s a task for Mr. [Parliament Speaker Volodymyr] Lytvyn to think whether he will flirt with his voters in Zhytomyr region or work in the interests of Ukraine and execute laws. The speaker has played a game called ‘Dismiss Me,’ knowing that it was impossible to collect 300 votes [for his dismissal] under the previous provision,” Kolesnichenko said.
