NYON, Switzerland (AP) — UEFA has banned AS Roma captain Daniele De Rossi for three matches after he struck Shakhtar Donetsk captain Dario Srna in the face during a Champions League match.

UEFA’s disciplinary panel sanctioned De Rossi on Friday after he was charged with improper conduct.

De Rossi will serve the ban in future Champions League or Europa League matches. He can appeal the punishment within three days.

UEFA acted after English referee Howard Webb missed the incident during Roma’s 3-0 loss and elimination in Ukraine last week. Webb then showed Srna a yellow card for protesting that De Rossi used his elbow.

Shakhtar advanced to the quarterfinals 6-2 on aggregate.
